Choosing a career as a rural medical practitioner is a fantastic chance and challenge. Europe is facing many health care issues in a changing context with an added impact on rural communities. Innovative solutions must be found and collaboration and open exchange between senior and younger practitioners is a key to success. A French study has demonstrated the significant advantages of working in a rural area for a young GP: diversity of practice, practice of «authentic» medicine in primary care, inclusion in the community and sense of belonging in the local area. A young GP should consider three main points when taking the decision to relocate: working environment, lifestyle with her/his family and inclusion in the community.
